Water modelling for the City Tunnel Project in Malmö, Sweden

Water modelling for the City Tunnel Project in Malmö, Sweden

In order to comply with the increasing train traffic after the construction of the Oresund fixed link the Malmö City tunnel Project has been proposed. The constructions should be completed in 2008 with an estimated total budget of 8.8 billion Swedish Kroner. The final project documents for the bidding process in relation to the project are presently under preparation.

A major challenge during the excavation works will be to pump more than 1000 m3/hour of water from combined leaking groundwater and seepage of seawater from the harbour. At the same time the groundwater draw down must not exceed 0.3 m in order to secure the wooden piles under the old houses in the city center. Obviously this requires a complicated network of pumping and injection wells located in and around the excavation pits.

In order to assist in the planning activities DHI Water & Environment in association with DHI Sweden and SWECO provide detailed groundwater modeling - using MIKE SHE’s 3D groundwater model.
